Message from the De Beers Fund
The De Beers Fund thanks Cotlands for the privilege of partnering with this exemplary childcare organisation, and specifically with the Soweto Home-Based Care and Counselling Project.
Our doing so forms part of an annual corporate social investment undertaking that sees De Beers and its operations working with over 150 organisations throughout South Africa with investments in people and communities in whom we believe, in a country confident in her liberty.
De Beers has never regarded CSI as frivolous activity and has acted in accordance with a philosophy summed up in 1954 by then De Beers Chairman Sir Ernest Oppenheimer: “…the purpose of the company is to make profits for its shareholders, but to do so in a way that makes a real and lasting contribution to the countries and communities in which it operates”.

SPAR
SPAR SOUTH RAND’S REMARKABLE CSI SUPPORT TO COTLANDS, AND OTHER NGO’S
For the past nine years, Spar South Rand has shown remarkable support to Cotlands, in what started out with its Annual Charity Golf Day, held in aid of raising funds for Cotlands – to its current support of an annual golf day, CSI support and donations of goods in kind. The management and staff have always been close to our hearts, as they have grown with us and are a very precious part of our history – and we’d like to take this opportunity to pay a special tribute to their support – not only to Cotlands, but to other organizations making a difference.
Hereunder is a reflection of Spars support during the financial year 2005/6, where they have continued to assist Cotlands and Lebone (Bloemfontein). They also got involved on a small scale with St Francis, an HIV/AIDS orphanage five minutes from the DC. Our involvement with BAC saw us making a meaningful contribution towards building capacity in terms of leadership in the police stations.
1. Cotlands
2006 saw Cotlands celebrating their 70th birthday – 70 proud years of service to South Africa’s littlest and most vulnerable citizens. Through our involvement with Cotlands, we know that we are making a difference to the rest of the country. This is because whilst Cotlands’ head office is based in Johannesburg, they also operate in KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and Western Cape.
2. Lebone
Lebone (literally means “LIGHT” in Sesotho) is there to bring light to those living in darkness - to give children a future! Lebone House is a holistic care centre for children infected/affected by HIV/AIDS which embraces, affirms and adheres to all aspects of their constitutional rights. Because they believe that each child has a right to live within their own family, culture and community Lebone House strives to provide an alternative setting that approximates that of their own family when there is no family.
3. St Francis Care Centre
St Francis Care Centre provides a sanctuary for the terminally ill where they will be nursed in a professional and comfortable environment whilst their physical, spiritual, emotional and social needs are catered for with care and dedication.
4. Business Against Crime
Business Against Crime South Africa’s Support Programme for Police Stations (SPPS), which is significantly funded by Spar South Rand, aims to strengthen leadership and effective management in police stations in support of the South African Police Services’ quest for improved service and performance.
A Memorandum of Understanding between BACSA and SAPS was signed in Pretoria on 19 May 2006 by Kenny Fihla, the then CEO of Business Against Crime South Africa and Deputy National Commissioner Marla Singh in terms of which BACSA undertakes to conduct the standardised Leadership Development Programme in a footprint comprising a third of the police stations in each province between now and the end of 2008.
Currently the programme operates in Gauteng, Mpumalanga and North West, is about to commence in Eastern Cape, and will roll out to other provinces shortly.
The course outline incorporates modules on effective service delivery, self-management, creative problem-solving and decision-making, relationship management, team development, management principles, and leadership and motivation.
Business Against Crime South Africa partners with businesses who are willing to sponsor training sessions of groups of 24 police station managers at a time for the six-day programme. Three East Rand police stations - Dawn Park, Eden Park, and Boksburg North – have just completed their training at Spar South Rand , bringing to ten the number of Gauteng police station management teams that have been trained so far in 2006.
Probably the greatest benefit of the programme is its team approach. This is the first time that management teams of police stations have undertaken training together. As commented by one of the East Rand group last week “we have learned to work as a team because individuals cannot make the difference alone and in the environment in which we work it is particularly important that we support and advise each other”.
Our sincere thanks and gratitude to Spar for making a difference to the lives of the South African community.
Astrotech donation to Cotlands
Every month Astro Tech trains hundreds of people, some are young individuals filled with hope for their future, others are older and concerned more about the future of their families and children. Because children and stable, caring societies are so important to the future of the South African society, Astro Tech is proud to make a donation to Cotlands in its work protecting, caring for and loving those South African children who have been abandoned, harmed, are ill, or at risk.
In African culture we know the phrase, “it takes a village to raise a child” – the creation of happy, settled futures for our children is an individual and a corporate responsibility. Astro Tech works hard to improve the skills of South Africans and to help in the creation of an ethical, educated, caring society. We salute too every individual and organisation that assists Cotlands, its staff and volunteers in caring for some of South Africa’s most important citizens – our children.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT LIST
On behalf of the children we have known, those we know and those we are yet to know, we gratefully thank each business, individual, corporation and foundation that so generously contributed to the Cotlands’ services. Your assistance has built a strong foundation of support, and we are so grateful for these gifts.

Funding received from these partners has provided us with a means to assist more children and expand our scope of service.
As a growing organization who’s services are reaching an increasing number of beneficiaries, sustainability has become an important issue for us. We have to ensure that the needs of the present generation are met, without compromising our ability to do the same for future generations. In partnership with the funders listed herein, we remain committed to filling the medico-socio-economic gaps in communities by providing a range of services to ensure food security, reverse the spread of HIV / Aids, create jobs and foster self-sustainability. To achieve this, we have ensured that all our outreach projects include food garden initiatives, income generating projects and educational components. |
