What is Early Childhood Development?

Early childhood development (ECD) is the period spanning from birth until the year before a child enters formal schooling. These first five years are critical for the development of a child’s brain. Children who experience high quality play-based early learning opportunities during the first five years of life have the advantage of acquiring the skills needed to succeed in school, employment and in life.

Cognitive Development

Helps in building skills associated with creativity, communication, collaboration, critical thinking, language and mathematical concepts.

Social & Emotional Development

Helps build cooperation, resilience and confidence, skills that are important for building healthy relationships and facing school, work and life’s challenges.

Physical Development

Helps build fine and gross motor skills that help children write, draw and run, all of which are important for growing healthy and strong muscles and bones.

Benefits of ECD on Individual

Ninety percent of a child’s brain development happens during the first five years. This is a critical period, not only because
it lays the foundation on which all later learning, behaviour and health depend,
but also because it determines the trajectory of a child’s life.
