Celebrity scrabble challenge

The stars came out to play for a worthy cause on Saturday 15 March at Fourways Mall. In a “spell-down” that tested their wits, celebrities faced off against each other in a game of scrabble to raise awareness for Cotlands and its goal to improve early learning opportunities for vulnerable children in South Africa.

Initiated by one of the most distinctive South African voices, HHP, the celebrity scrabble challenge – sponsored by CNA, Mattel and Fourways Mall – took on a new twist this year by incorporating some of SA’s best loved soapies.

“It’s our fourth year of the scrabble challenge. For me it is a fun way to highlight an important issue facing our country. We need to get children playing games that will help develop them into the caring, intelligent, problem-solving citizens that our country needs. It is also great to have the support of 7de Laan, Muvango and Rhythm City,” said HHP.

Hot off the heels of the 2014 Soapie Awards, 7de Laan were one of the first soapies to take up the challenge and enter a team.

“This was simply too good an opportunity to miss,” said Liby Nel, 7de Laan’s Publicity Coordinator. “What a privilege it was to make our small contribution towards the development of the next generation into all they can be. We would like to thank our fans for their loyalty and support, proving that together we can make a positive difference.”

Not to be out done by the hair twirling beauties of the silver screen, radio stations SAfm and Kaya FM also entered teams to show off their word skills.

As this year’s beneficiaries Cotlands children were also given the opportunity to play against the stars.
13 year old Bridget Mtetwa from Relwatsh Primary school took home first prize which included a scrabble set and gift card from CNA.

“It was an incredible experience to see children from our homework support groups do so well against adult competitors. When we started the move towards an education focused model we did not realise that we will begin to see positive results so soon. Children in all our programmes have made great strides and we thankful for initiatives such as the celebrity scrabble challenge that shines a light on the need for early intervention and good quality education,” said Cotlands CEO Jackie Schoeman.

This year’s winners were team HHP whose celebrity team mates included Ziyon and Ryzor from Liquid Deep and Shugasmakx.
