The #StrongTogether initiative is a symbol of unity and solidarity that is encouraged by Monaco’s sovereign family Prince Albert II who contracted and recovered from the coronavirus in March. The COVID pandemic has put a lot of strain on many countries and especially developing countries like ours. It will take some time for our economy to recover from the effect of the lockdown. Currently we have even more families in the community approaching us for food relief and care for their children. Through the #StrongTogether platform we hope to raise global awareness for our most vulnerable children that don’t have a voice.
The 2019 South African Early Childhood Review states that over 1.1 million children, aged three to five years, still do not have any access to any early learning programme. Early learning play-based opportunities are important in shaping the development of a child’s brain. We have one window of opportunity between ages of 0-5 years to ensure the cognitive health of a child is sound. Daily play-based interactions between children, parents, teachers and play facilitators in ECD programmes, playgroups and toy libraries are crucial if we want to give our children the best start in life. With the onset of COVID-19 pandemic, it is the vulnerable communities that we service that will suffer the most during this period.
That is why #StrongTogether is so amazing! It gives us an opportunity to unite and make a difference by voting or giving to our cause. Your actions can help us give every child a fair advantage to survive the pandemic and break out of an intergenerational poverty trap!
